The Cerrado

Uberlandia is right in the middle of the Cerrado ("sey-ha-do"), the Brazilian savannah. It is as rich and bio-diverse an ecosystem as any in this country, but unfortunately doesn't get the attention of the other biggies in Brazil, like the Amazonian rainforest or the Pantanal wetlands.

The cerrado has its own species of fauna, many of which - the tamandua (giant anteater), the maned wolf, the corruja (burrowing owl) and the onca (jaguar) - are threatened by human encroachment, primarily for agriculture. Coffee and soy are big here, as is livestock ranching. Brazil is the world's biggest coffee producer by a long margin, and the coffee grown in the cerrado is specially labeled and commands a premium price - and is not available here, as most of the production is exported.

The area around this city is reputed to have over 300 cachoeiras (waterfalls), most of them in privately-owned ranchland. The area has several major rivers, including the Paranaiba and Araguari. The ipe tree, with its bright yellow or pink flowers, is a striking presence in the grasslands around here.
