Raj and Maya - Caminho das Indias

The Road to India (Caminho das Indias) is a prime-time soap opera that was very popular in Brazil a while back, and that seems to be the main point of reference about things Indian for many of the people I have met here. The show itself seems, from what I'm told, to be on the lines of a typical Bollywood movie or soap - a love story amidst caste and class conflicts, with true love triumphing over materialism and nasty in-laws in the end.

An upshot of the popularity of the show is that many people assume that everyone in India bursts out into elaborately choreographed song and dance sequences at the slightest  provocation and that the wedding outfits in vogue in Yash Chopra movies (for those not familiar with his ouevre, think pinks and whites, lots of intricate embroidery and jewelry) are what we walk around in. I have done nothing to dispel that image, and have even added a bit of fuel to the fire with talks of how we travel on elephants through thick jungles where tigers roam. (Not really)

The Brazilian cast seem to do a good job of appearing Indian, aided in no small part by costume design and the similarity in appearance I see around here between Brazilians and Indians. Many people I see around here would not look out of place in any small city in India.
